| Project of the Year Presented by Ellis Don | | | Finalists: | | Alberta Children's Hospital Construction, Calgary Health Region, | 7MB video | | | Alberta Children's Hospital Relocation – "Kids On the Move", Calgary Health Region, | 7MB video | | | Cowley Todd Creek Gas Processing Facility and Gas Gathering System, Win Energy Corporation | 7MB video | | Video production by Rhettoric Media. | This award recognizes and honors the project team responsible for the Project of the Year, a successful project of significant size, complexity and/or impact. The team's success is due predominately to the superior performance and execution of exemplary project management methodology. Through this award, PMI-SAC will commit to elevating the profile of outstanding projects in the project management community and, by doing so, encourage project managers and team members to pursue the PMI path to extraordinary project success. Winner: Alberta Children's Hospital Relocation – "Kids On the Move", Calgary Health Region The Alberta Children's Hospital Relocation "Kids On the Move" Project was focused on moving acutely and chronically ill children to a new building and a new site. Moving a hospital from a free standing building to a free standing building is a rare event and is considered one of the most difficult projects to accomplish. The move impacted all facets of the hospital, the community and the City of Calgary. Unlike an office move, a hospital cannot be 'closed', moved and reopened when complete. It had to remain operational. Patient care and safety were of utmost importance. In the months and weeks leading up to the move, staff over-prepared and put contingency plans in to place for every possible scenario. The impact of moving to a new larger site, changing processes, and leaving a site that was 'home' to many staff and patients was an enormous change project. Detailed communication strategies were designed and executed for the 21 months leading up to the move. The Relocation Project brought 51 in-patient children and infants safely to their new 'home' on September 27th, 2006. Additionally, thousands of other items used for the daily operation of the hospital were also moved. The entire move was completed without any adverse affect to patients, medical equipment or medical supplies. |
| Distinguished Contribution – Organization Presented by Sierra Systems | | | Finalists: ENMAX Power Corporation, Graycon Group Inc., Project Management Specialization, University of Calgary This award recognizes an organization that provides long-term service and commitment to project management methodology and best practices. Winner: Project Management Specialization, University of Calgary The Project Management Specialization program at the University of Calgary was established in 1983 with the initiative and direction of industry professionals. The Project Management Advisory Council (PMAC) was formed by a group of approximately 40 senior industry personnel and University of Calgary faculty members to oversee and guide the development of the Project Management Specialization. The program was conceived as a collaboration between the Schulich School of Engineering and Haskayne School of Business, thereby providing access to expertise in both engineering and business. The Project Management Specialization is considered a leader in the education, practice and research of project management. It is the only Canadian program that provides extensive education, training and research for many industries, and it has earned an outstanding national and international reputation. The faculty members and students of the Project Management Specialization have developed many project management tools, techniques and processes. | Community Advancement through Project Management Presented by Suncor | | | Finalists: Health Microinsurance (Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan), Klondike Reflections Art History Book, Storehouse-39-3-10 This award recognizes significant achievement or sustained performance by individuals or organizations that have improved the well being of a community by completing a project or applying project management principles to the delivery of goods and services. "Community" could be considered a city, town, municipality, neighborhood, community centre or organization, local charitable foundation or any other organized group working to improve or enhance community living. PMI-SAC hopes to highlight community advancement projects and encourage more project managers to become actively involved in serving their communities. Winner: Klondike Reflections Art History Book The communities of Barrhead and Fort Assiniboine hosted the 2005 World's Masters Games for Orienteering. To capitalize on this economic opportunity, Trident Exploration was chosen to explore possible community economic development that would promote and market tourism potential within their communities and create an income stream. The project was an exceptional one for Trident. It required extensive mentoring from the initial planning on how to market the community and its artistic strengths through to the production of a coffee table book, the identification of artists around a historical theme, the selection of art and photography into a publication format, the design, scripting and printing, the marketing, and finally to the sale of the book. The sale of the books produced revenues greater than 200% of what was originally invested – an additional $20,000 in funds for the community which was then earmarked towards funding for a future art centre and gallery. In raising this money as independently acquired revenues versus community donations, the community may now apply for additional matching foundation and government grants that they may not have been previously eligible for, in order to reach the eventual goal of an art centre. |
