Captain James Lovell,
Career Astronaut and Commander of Apollo 13
The Successful Failure | |
In September 1962, Captain James Lovell was chosen for the space program following his extensive experiences as a naval aviator and test pilot. His various commands in the Gemini Mission Program included serving as the pilot on the history-making Gemini 7 flight, back-up commander for the Gemini 9 flight, and commander of the Gemini 12 spacecraft. At the close of the Gemini Program, Captain Lovell became command module pilot and navigator for the six-day-long Apollo 8 mission, humanity’s maiden voyage to the moon. He later served as backup commander to Neil Armstrong for the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission. His fourth and final flight into space was as commander of the perilous Apollo 13 mission in 1970. In 1973, Captain Lovell left the space program to join the Bay-Houston Towing Company. He became president and CEO of Bay-Houston in 1975, and later joined Fisk Telephone Systems, again as company president. The company was acquired by Centel Corporation in 1980, and Captain Lovell became executive vice president. Today, he is president of Lovell Communications, a business devoted to disseminating information about the U.S. space program. In 1994, Lovell and Jeff Kluger wrote Lost Moon, the story of the courageous mission of Apollo 13. In 2000, the book was re-released as Apollo 13: Anniversary Edition to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission. In 1995, Apollo 13, the film version of the bestseller, was released to rave reviews. Lovell also appeared in several segments of Tom Hanks’s From the Earth to the Moon, the acclaimed HBO documentary miniseries that aired in the spring of 1998. Captain Lovell is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Southern California’s Aviation Safety School, and the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. He has earned many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, two Navy Distinguished Flying Crosses, and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
